Winter Print Residency

January 23, 2012

The last week and a half I have been fortunate enough to participate in  Penland’s Winter print residency. Margot Ecke, the master printer in letterpress, has been a breath of fresh air. She introduced me to trace monotypes and has managed to get me excited about a book project!

Two Step Press

November 30, 2011

I finally came up with a press name. Two Step Press it is! You can check out the new cards I made this fall on my etsy site. More soon!

Summer is escaping.

August 22, 2011
Summer is escaping so quickly. The past few weeks have included an enlightening Japanese Woodcut class with Keiji Shinohara, the Core Fellows open house during the annual auction here at Penland, and now a lot of catch up work on my session off. I felt very lucky to get to take a class with Keiji, he is an incredible teacher. The most exciting new technique I learned in his class was Woodcut Intaglio which you can see a sample of above (more to come). The Core open house was also amazing. We got a lot of positive response and my furniture designing roommate Jack Mauch got a nice little write up on the American Craft blog. As far as catching up on my session off I have been checking a lot of things off the old to do list. It feels splendid.

Iron

June 19, 2011

At the last-minute a spot opened up in Eric Ryser’s etched steel class and I jumped at the chance. This is my first time in the iron shop and there has been a lot to learn. The pictures above are a few process shots, a picture of the piece Seth etched and forged, and a few shots of the plates I am working on. By the end of the week I should have a tent sculpture made to look like an old tin toy.

Spring 2011

May 9, 2011

These are a few details of the final prints I made this spring. It was an amazing concentration here at Penland and I have to thank Leslie Noell and Amy Tavern for helping me through the process. It feels like I just opened up a door that I have been staring at for years.

Things that happened this week.

April 23, 2011

Seth Gould taught me how a file works. Now I am better at beveling my plates.

I fell in love with etching. I might have already mentioned that.

Jack Mauch made a portrait of the core students as popcorn.

I went for a walk through this pasture with a friend on his birthday.

I helped make this cake for another friends birthday. Yes that is the ghost of Gram Parsons!

And last but not least I finally got to take  a picture of this truck that I have admired for the past year. I love my new camera!

Printshop Love

April 16, 2011

I have been hanging out in the print studio a lot lately. Between my independent study, one week classes, and commission work I can always find a reason to be in the shop. I can’t contain myself either. Currently I am taking up about five tables  and four flat files. Oh well! The most important thing that has happened though is me falling in love with etching! I can translate the tiniest little lines of my drawings. I love it, the copper, the scribe, the lines, the print.  Above are a few little etching I did in my last one week class. Below those are a few shots of the new invite I did for the school.

Horizon

March 12, 2011

Lately I have been playing with drawing on the smokey square prints I did in the Fall. The combination of the black ink and the graphite seem to be sticking with me. They remind me of old films and scratchy windows. This Spring I will be doing an independent study centered around the translation of my drawn line to print. I will step away from woodcuts and into some new possibilities. Class starts tomorrow. SGC conference on Wednesday.

Birthday Cards

February 9, 2011

I finally put my new birthday cards up on etsy. If you know a sweet lady or a hell of a fellow who is having a birthday be sure to check them out here. This is a bit of a new direction for me, a bridge between my design work and my print work. It was also one of my first attempts with the forbidden polymer plates.
